On September 21, 1847 Mauritius became the fifth country in the world and the first British Colony to issue postage stamps.
The famous'
POST
OFFICE ' issues, the One Penny Red and the Two Pence Blue (SG1 &
SG2) printed by
Joseph
Osmond Barnard, are undeniably among the rarest and most valuable stamps of
the world. Out of the 500 one penny and the 500 two pence designed by
J.O.Barnard, only fifteen 1d and twelve 2d stamps have been salvaged.
The First Official First
Day Cover of Mauritius was issued in 1966, 24th of January, to commemorate
Sir Winston
Churchill .
The Official First Day Covers
and first day of issue envelopes are shown on this web site in chronological
order and it is hoped that this will serve as a guide to our post-independence
philatelic heritage and also as a reference for collectors of Mauritian stamps.
